Job Summary

Oversee project accounting activities to ensure capital project costs are recorded accurately and in accordance with the company’s capitalization policy. This role will manage the purchase order and invoice matching processes for capital expenditures and lead a team responsible for project accounting and purchasing support.

This position is based in Leawood, KS and is not eligible for relocation.

What you will be doing:

  • Manage the project accounting system to ensure accurate tracking and reporting of capital project costs.
  • Oversee purchase order creation and invoice matching processes for all capital expenditures.
  • Transfer project costs, write off inactive projects, and investigate discrepancies between project accounting records and accounts payable records.
  • Close the project accounting subledger each month and resolve any discrepancies.
  • Perform month-end reconciliations and assist with accrual entries related to property, equipment, remodel activities, holding accounts, and capital project interest.
  • Monitor and respond to a high volume of inquiries related to project accounting and purchase orders.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues that arise with projects, invoices, or purchase orders across departments.
  • Collaborate with departments across the organization to review capital spending requests and ensure compliance with company’s capitalization policy.
  • Review and troubleshoot daily invoice and purchase order files from the work order management system and its integration with the financial system.
  • Support testing, troubleshooting, and implementation of system updates, patches, and new functionality within financial and reporting systems.
  • Supervise and support a team of specialists by providing day-to-day direction and performance engagement to ensure responsibilities are completed effectively.
  • Complete special projects and other assignments as requested by leadership.

What we need from you:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, or equivalent relevant work experience.
  • 2+ years of experience managing or supervising employees.
  • 3+ years of experience in an accounting-related role.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with individuals across departments and organizational levels.
  • Knowledge of capitalization policy and how it applies to capital expenditure decisions.
  • Advanced proficiency with spreadsheet software, including use of pivot tables and formulas.
  • Strong understanding of internal control processes and documentation related to capital expenditures and fixed assets.
  • Experience working with financial systems that support purchasing, project accounting, fixed assets, accounts payable, and general ledger functions.
  • Familiarity with systems that manage work orders and project-related invoices.
  • Experience with systems testing, troubleshooting, and implementation.
  • Ability to supervise a team, make sound decisions, solve problems, delegate work, and take ownership of assigned responsibilities.
  •  Ability to adapt to new or changing technology and systems.

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation or experience working in public accounting.
  • Master of Business Administration (MBA) or a master’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • Experience working with enterprise resource planning systems or accounting subledger systems

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, or equivalent relevant work experience.
  • 2+ years of experience managing or supervising employees.
  • 3+ years of experience in an accounting-related role.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with individuals across departments and organizational levels.
