Analyst, Payroll Tax
Job Summary
The Payroll Tax Analyst ensures payroll operations comply with all applicable federal, state, and local tax laws, as well as internal policies and controls. This role leads the development and maintenance of payroll tax compliance processes, supports system functionality, and partners with internal teams and external vendors to deliver accurate and timely payroll tax reporting. The role also drives continuous improvement across payroll tax operations.
This position is based in Leawood, KS and is not eligible for relocation.
What you will be doing:
- Lead the review and analysis of payroll tax records to ensure compliance with applicable laws, audit requirements, and internal policies.
- Develop, implement, and maintain payroll tax processes and standard procedures.
- Manage month end, quarter end and year end payroll tax activities and reporting.
- Research payroll tax issues, determine root causes, and implement effective solutions.
- Interpret legislative and regulatory changes and guide system, process, and policy updates in partnership with internal teams.
- Collaborate with technology and system teams to maintain and enhance payroll tax system functionality.
- Create and maintain standard and ad hoc reporting to support business and operational needs.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on payroll tax compliance, policies, and procedures.
- Provide guidance and support to resolve complex payroll tax issues and prevent errors.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with third-party payroll vendors to ensure service quality and compliance.
- Identify opportunities to improve processes, strengthen controls, and increase efficiency.
What we need from you:
- 5+ years of payroll tax experience.
- Experience designing and implementing processes and procedures in a structured environment.
- Strong understanding of accounting principles and internal control requirements.
- Extensive knowledge of payroll tax laws, compliance requirements, and reconciliations.
- Experience supporting payroll tax systems, including system upgrades, maintenance, and process improvements.
- Demonstrated ability to perform detailed audit and compliance work.
- Ability to identify process improvements and implement effective solutions.
- Strong technical aptitude and ability to work with payroll systems and reporting tools.
- Advanced knowledge of complex payroll concepts, including Federal, State and Local tax reporting.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
- Ability to interpret policies, document processes, and communicate clearly in written and verbal formats.
- Strong attention to detail with a focus on accuracy and data security.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with a high level of confidentiality.
- Professional communication style and ability to collaborate effectively across teams.
What we also value (preferred):
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, accounting, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Certified Payroll Professional certification.
- 2+ years of experience leading team members or managing external vendors.
Minimum qualifications:
- 5+ years of payroll tax experience.
- Experience designing and implementing processes and procedures in a structured environment.
- Strong understanding of accounting principles and internal control requirements.
- Extensive knowledge of payroll tax laws, compliance requirements, and reconciliations.
